There were a total of 760 Class “B” companies under the supervision of the Insurance Supervision Division at the end of June 2010, 4 less than at the end of March 2010. Pure captives and Segregated Portfolio Companies represent the two main categories of Class “B” entities, with 424 and 121 companies respectively.
The fundamentals of the insurance sector remain sound and the industry in general has been relatively resilient in a very challenging market environment.
As of 30 June 2010, total premiums were reported at US$7.49 billion, compared to US$7.54 billion as at 31 March 2010. Total assets, as of 30 June 2010, were reported at US$42.2 billion, compared to US$44.9 billion as at 31 March 2010.
The Cayman Islands is the leading jurisdiction for healthcare captives. As at June 2010 this sector continues to be the largest primary of business with 266 companies, with workers’ compensation as the second largest with 158 companies.
The Cayman Islands captive insurance industry is composed mainly of companies insuring risks in North America. The next most important geographical source is the Caribbean and Latin American region.
